Why Should I Get Baptized Again?

You were baptized as a baby. So why would you need to be baptized again?

Maybe you’ve asked yourself that question. You believe in God. You may have been baptized as an infant, and your family chose to dedicate you to God. So why would you consider baptism again now?

Because baptism is a personal decision to follow Jesus—and it’s a decision you make for yourself.

Baptism and Baby Dedication Are Different

The Bible gives us examples of parents dedicating their children to God, but we do not find an example of infants being baptized. Even Jesus was dedicated to God as a baby.

Baby dedication is a beautiful expression of a parent’s commitment to raise their child to know, love, and follow God. Baptism, however, is something a person chooses when they are able to understand the Gospel, believe in Jesus, repent, and make a personal commitment to follow Him.

Baptism is your response to what Jesus has already done for you.

Baptism Is About New Life

When you choose to be baptized, you are publicly declaring that you have placed your faith in Jesus Christ.

The Bible describes baptism as a picture of what happens when we give our lives to Christ. Going under the water represents the death and burial of our old way of life. Coming out of the water represents being raised to a new life in Christ.

“Therefore we were buried with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too may walk in newness of life.”
— Romans 6:4

Baptism doesn’t save us—Jesus does. Baptism is a public declaration that you have already placed your faith in Him and are choosing to follow Him.

It’s More Than a Ceremony

Baptism can be a powerful turning point in your walk with Christ. It is a moment when you publicly say:

“Jesus is my Lord and Savior. I am leaving my old life behind, and I am choosing to follow Him.”

As you continue walking with Jesus, He begins transforming your heart, your priorities, your relationships, and the way you live. Through the Holy Spirit, God gives you strength to resist sin, grow in faith, and become more like Christ.

You don’t have to have everything figured out before you get baptized. Baptism isn’t a declaration that you’ve become perfect. It’s a declaration that you’ve chosen to follow the One who is.

If You Were Baptized as a Baby

Being baptized as a believer isn’t about rejecting your parents’ decision or diminishing the dedication that took place when you were a child.

It’s about making your own declaration of faith.

Your parents may have made a commitment for you when you were young. Now, you have the opportunity to make that commitment for yourself. If you believe that Jesus Christ is your Lord and Savior and you have never been baptized as a believer, perhaps this is your next step.
